I was separated from my then wife in the summer of 2008 after I had discovered she was stepping out on me. In my imbecilic mind believing 2 wrongs actually made a right, I put up a dating profile on OkCupid and saw other women. One of the perks of the site was mutual match which pairs members up with other members based on interests and so forth. One of my mutual matches was a blonde 18 year old from a town half a hour south of where I had lived. We talked for a while about senseless stuff online and I was pretty sure it wasn’t gonna go anywhere anyways but one day we were on web cam and she masturbated on screen. When she was through, she said it would be nice if she had a hand. Long story short, I was on board so I went to her and we hooked up. About a week after that she told me she wasn’t 18. She was 16. I put it on hold to check the laws of the land to see if what we were doing was legal. In the state, 16 just so happened to be the age of consent. Throughout the summer we hooked up when it was convenient and I really didn’t have any doubts considering she came clean about being 16. I figured that was the long and short of it. It was the first part of September in 2008 I was getting my kids ready for first day of school and some guy who dressed like a Floridian tourist came knocking at my door. He asked me if I was such and such. I said yes I am. Are you the guy from eBay who bought the generator I sold? He said no, I’m a sheriff’s deputy with a warrant to search you’re house and arrest you. I go to jail. Things just get worse from there. My bail is the mathematical equivalent of half a million dollars. My public defender putting my best interests forward could do no more than pray that the DNA kit is delayed by time trial hits. The judge is up for retention vote and needs to look harsh on crime. I learn the girl was in fact 14. 3 months shy of 15. And claiming that I sadistically and brutally raped her and for some unknown reason, not a soul in the criminal justice system wants to go through my msn messenger chat log I had with her or verify through the OkCupid site that she did in fact possess a fraudulent date profile. 6 months later I got 10 to life, parental rights with my kids terminated with restraining orders till they turn 18, mandatory gps, treatment, the whole ball of wax. Not to mention a pearl of wisdom from the political panderer of a judge I got where he said to me ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law. I had a civic duty to exercise due diligence and verify her age. Nice. Very nice. We live in a world where a computer can make anyone anybody or any age and this guy is stuck in the 18th century. Now the sad part about all of this is not too long after my dad died we were going through boxes of stuff and I found printouts of the girls bogus profile from spring of 2009 and fall of 2008. These were dated. So even after I had begun serving my sentence she was still on OkCupid running her little scam. My dad told me when I was still in county jail that he showed those papers to the prosecutor, defense attorney and the judge personally. All 3 didn’t want a thing to do with it. I’ve always believed this was a railroad job because there were mitigating circumstances that could have given me a more equal and favorable outcome that were cast aside and ignored completely. I know I’m not the only one this has happened to and it’s a shame because it’s a gross perversion of justice. Since then, I remarried, have 4 kids and we are property investors. I do my best to give back and do well by my family. To raise them right. I had the mayor of the town I live in come by a home I bought and was roofing and he shook my hand and visited a while. Aside from all the bad, there can be good. Don’t live by some generic government given label. Make yourself stand out in a positive way.
