AK: Sentences to become harsher for sex offenses

May 13, 2019, 10:59 am

The Alaska legislature recently passed H.B. 49, which increases the maximum period of probation for sex offenders and bars sex offenders from receiving good time credit while in prison or on parole.

Although we focus on consequences of registration and not necessarily punishment for sex offenses, it is concerning to us that lawmakers in Alaska are still distinguishing one class of person from another and removing an incentive from individuals who can benefit from maintaining good behavioir while incarcerated.
