I currently live in an area in Indiana where Ripley, Dearborn, Franklin, and Ohio counties connect on the tri-state border. My story is about Dearborn county specifically abusing power to demean, terrorize, harass, and persecute people forced to register for absolutely no reason other than the personal views of the cops. The registry officer who presides over the registry in the Dearborn county Indiana sheriffs dept. has become a regular terror to people forced to register. She allows officers – both rookies and veterans – use the registry in any way to cause or create chaos.
The law in Indiana states that people forced to register have 30 days to update their information upon moving to a new address or location. But due to restrictions of the DMV, homelessness, etc., there have been issues with people being able to make these changes. Furthermore there have been various people arrested for not updating their ID within 30 days who have actually not even come close to hitting the 30 day limit! Officers are using old paperwork to trump up charges. Officers are using the law that states you must have an id on you at all times to illegally stop and ID people forced to register without probable cause or suspicion of a crime. Officers here are constantly harassing people and allowing community members to harass people using the registry to intimidate and terrorize people both on Facebook and in public. Even though the registry site says it is illegal, law enforcement has failed to prosecute anyone for using the registry site to terrorize, harass, or bully people forced to register. And it’s only getting worse. Many people forced to register fear for their lives, but law enforcement will not assist them or protect them from these threats.
