The punishment can be an overkill

I was 15 years old when i was charged and was registered for 10 years after drug-related probation violations. If I had the knowledge that I have now, none of it would’ve happened. I grew up in a social environment where child pornography was normalized in my school between students, and being someone with autism it was hard to understand right & wrong when I was surrounded with the issue. Being at that age when I was charged, I had countless of people try to physically assault me, harass, and stalk my family, all while claiming they were going to kill me. Law enforcement wasn’t much help, and at that age I was being treated as an adult.

Police officers tried to interrogate and interview me without any parental intervention or supervision. It was a very traumatic experience for me at that age, and it feels unjust, especially when I know I do not fit the description. There are people out there who deserve the extreme consequences that fit this kind of violation, but at that age you’re mostly learning, and I’ve seen a mass increase of children who have offended. This screams more of a “System problem” than a “People problem”, I feel there should be a mandatory education on this issue, especially for children and teenagers. I pray things change, and the education of this matter becomes more readily available to the citizens of the United States.
