Post-Incarceration Commitment: Injustice & Waste

Virginia State Senator Joe Morrissey and Delegate Patrick Hope discussed their effort to end laws that impact individuals categorized as violent sexual predators. Their proposed legislation would seek to end the costly practice of civilly committing these people involuntarily in a so called “mental health facility”  that is really a pre-crime preventative detention prison, up to as long as the rest of their lives after adjudicated sentences end.

Purportedly this is being done to prevent future offenses. The lack of logic behind this justification, the high cost of the civil commitment program, and its lack of quality were discussed in a Justice Coalition Town Hall in which members of the Just Future Project asked important questions of the legislators.
